We've been going to El Cid for 15 years, multiple times per year. They used to offer dinner from the menu, the rooms smelled like bleach after a cleaning, and the staff was friendly. Not this trip. The one night we decided to order room service because the buffets had been mediocre and that's all they offer for dinner now..my husband got food poisoning. He was extremely ill and spent half his time puking or on the toilet, or BOTH. The little manager lady didn't like that we were ordering room service instead of the buffet, that's the only place we ate and he got really sick...so we know it was their food.
Secondly- they would tell us "that's not included in YOUR all inclusive...like the wifi codes we originally got that didn't work so they had to print out new ones, or ordering food at dinner from the menu..
Thirdly- the red flags were up unless cruise passengers were there- they we're not willing to lose money on the cruise guys, but didn't want us swimming. So when cruises started coming in,- the flags magically changed to yellow.
Finally- they were painting the room next to ours, and the fumes were horrible. We all got migraines but they didn't want to move our rooms. There were also a ton of itty bitty ants climbing all over our stuff. Presumably because they had the patio opened up in the room remodeled.
We've turned or taken over 30 people to this place as we thought it was the best. Now we're looking for a new hotel in cozumel. Never again.
