Historic Pet Friendly Home on 3 acres w/AC between Durango and Purgatory

Our 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom single level home was built in 1955 by one of the original homesteaders on what used to be one of the original valley ranches north of Durango, where privacy abounds and frequent wildlife sightings include deer, elk, black bear, wild turkey, hawks etc.

The home has been completely remodeled offering a fantastic gourmet kitchen and modern bathrooms as well as AC but also retains its original charm. The property also features a fenced yard, outdoor covered space and a seasonal irrigation creek that runs thru the property.

Bed Configuration (single level home):
Master Suite - King Bed with private bath
2nd Bedroom - Queen Bed
3rd Bedroom - Bunk Beds (Single over Single)

This home is pet friendly! We allow a maximum of 2 dogs max and the pet fee is $40/day (for a max $250 per stay).

Book at least a week and a 10% discount is automatically applied (Excludes Christmas/New Years).

Stay with us and we offer DISCOUNTS on both summer (white water rafting, horseback riding etc.) and winter (ski/snowboard rentals, sleigh rides, snowmobile tours etc.) activities.

Cancellation Policy: A non-refundable payment of $300 is required at the time of booking. This $300 payment is applied toward the total amount due and is only refundable within 72 hours of the time of the booking is made. If your arrival date is within 30 days of booking, payment in full is required at the time of booking. Cancellations or changes to stay dates, including changes that result in a shortened stay, are not permitted within 30 days of arrival, and any such changes will result in a penalty. Cancellations or changes that are made within thirty (30) days of the arrival date, forfeit the entire reservation amount while cancellations made more than thirty (30) days in advance of your arrival only forfeit the $300 payment made at the time of booking. For reservations that are at least thirty (30) nights, the cancellation policy above increases to sixty (60) days prior to the arrival date. We do offer travel insurance.

Fall Getaway

Visited Durango this past week and enjoyed our time at this cabin. It's close to town but feels like you're in the middle of the mountains. Lots of wildlife each day including elk and turkeys. Great kitchen and outdoor space. Plenty of room for family...definitely a peaceful retreat. Small fenced yard was perfect for dogs. Highly recommend!

Wonderful stay in the mountains

Honestly, this is the best rental property we've ever stayed at. You're about 20 minutes north of Durango, but very close to the highway and it's easy to get to town or north to Purgatory/Silverton. The property has a full kitchen with all of the kitchen-y stuff you'd need (honestly, we were taking pictures of things in this kitchen we want to add to our own house). There's a full gas/propane dual fuel grill as well out back. The yard is perfect for your four legged friends, and the rest of the house is great for a longer-term stay (great bathrooms -- jacuzzi tub) and the laundry units in the basement. But what really sets this property apart is the responsiveness of the VRC staff. We got in pretty late, but they still checked in on us to make sure that we got in the house okay, and they were responsive via text the whole time we were there. We're definitely going to be making a return visit!

Such a cute piece of history!

This house was super easy to find, has updated amenities and amazing showers! We loved our stay and were able to hike up the hill that was within walking distance. Turkeys and elk greeted us every morning and evening. Loved it!

Awesome location

Off the beaten path but perfect for us with our 4 wheeled drive vehicle in the winter. The house is beautifully remodeled and the bathrooms and kitchen are great. The only comment I would have is less glass size tables in the master bedroom. They just don’t have much space to put glasses and water on. Staff was friendly and the house was very clean. Highly recommend if you like having space.

Amazing home and views

This home was amazing and we will definitely be staying here again. We loved the updated bathrooms and big kitchen. The views and stream that ran through the yard was so beautiful and our kids enjoyed running around. Their were a lot of dead bugs in the kitchen and their was mice poop in the main bedroom on the bedding and side table.

Perfect Mountain Retreat

This charming rock house is idyllic: resting at the foot hills of the mountains and a cold mountain creek running through the 4-acre property, with lots of Colorado wildlife to see. The owners take great care of the property and were very helpful. A wonderful place for a family with kids and dogs to enjoy.

Rock House Rocks!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Rock House. The location was perfect. Close enough to town, but far enough to enjoy the nature setting. The house was great for our family of 4 and 2 pups. Not exactly roughing it

Our stay at this stone cabin was far more than we ever expected. We arrived in autumn as part of a harvest trip. The kitchen was amazing. It is truly a cook's kitchen. The wood-burning fireplace was simple to use and authentically charming. I was pleasantly surprised to find a steam shower in the master. The renovation is outstanding, the lawn is meticulously maintained and the wildlife put on a show that's much better than anything on TV. I already miss it. We will definitely be back!

Green grass!

Great house with a large private yard perfect for our dogs. Very quiet at night so we could hear the coyotes howl. Owners live next door (not too close) and checked in daily to handle a house repair due to roof damage from a tree falling on the house a few weeks prior to our stay. They kept us up to date and fully aware of the repair activities. VRBO offered an alternative property that wasn’t equivalent so we opted to keep our original plan knowing that there would be repair work during our stay. Even with the repair work, we would rate the house second best with our many VRBO rentals (first was a Lake Tahoe stay).

We had a wonderful stay at the Rock House. The home was perfectly suited for our family. Lots of room to cook and enjoy eating together a lot since restaurants were closed and it was Christmas. Beautifully renovated rock cabin, near houses while still feeling removed. Loved seeing the wildlife outside. Our young boys enjoyed exploring in the open space. We also did the Polar Express train ride in Durango which was fun!

Disappointed

I always like to do my reviews as a good, the bad, and the ugly. Please read until the ugly. The Good: The property was beautiful and serene. It really was a place you’d love to take you family. A stone cottage off the beaten path in Colorado. The property was huge. The home was meticulously remodeled and every need you’d imagine was covered. The contract we signed mentioned multiple times there was no AC, but the heat was more than adequate and the attic fan cooled the home very well. The bad: nothing conventional. The ugly: I have rented multiple homes over the years and I am a VRBO owner and own rental properties. While some people do not mnd renting a room or like to meet the owner, I am not one of them. I rent homes so that I can bring my dog and have the home to myself. The listing multiple times listed privacy at the home, but that was not my experience. The first morning I went to get some food and when I came home there were two men in the backyard. The property owner lives on the adjacent property and he was there. He told me he was just watering the lawn. He seemed nice and I thought it was a one time deal. It was not. He was always lurking around. That first day he had sprinklers going in the backyard to the point it was unusable. There was a golf course type sprinkler going in the front yard that covered so much area that it was unusable. He came back later on his ATV and moved it so that the end of the concerete pathway at the front was unusable. I have two small children and the point of renting this home was for them to be able to run around and enjoy the property, however every day their movement was restricted by the owner being around and his sprinklers. The third day it became unbearable (the 2nd day was a repeat of the 1st). I was on vacation and hoping to sleep in, but at 9 am I was woke up by the property owner on his riding lawnmower. When I got in the shower I was watching him in the backyard trying not to watch me in the shower. It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so ridiculous. When I took my children outside he was moving his huge sprinkler to another area. I had to keep my children on the porch to avoid the front yard sprinkler and keep distancing. He had another sprinkler going in the patio area. When I have a tenant I can’t be on the property, that’s the law. He was there every day. My family felt like our privacy was violated. I feel like I should have a refund for a weekend was essentially wasted.

Beautiful home, great location, dog friendly!

Great location, awesome yard, great dog run and overall was perfect for our dog. Getting down to Durango was easy, but could have easily stayed at the house and watched the wildlife and scenery the whole time. Will definitely be back!
