We liked the size of the room We didn't like that the property as a whole was old and tired and things were worn, eg. windowsills were rotting, the stair rails had been fixed with bits of metal The toilet broke during the night, fortunately my husband is hand and managed to fix it but found it had previously been repaired with wire which had rusted. The room smelt damp. The reception staff were polite but not really welcoming, seemed a little disinterested. We had asked for a late checkout but then found we'd been locked out of our room when we got back after breakfast The location was handy so we could walk to places to eat.

We liked that the accommodation was in the central city and easily walkable to shops, restaurants and surrounding areas. The beds were very comfortable. Although we were aware that the VR is a very old building, and relatively inexpensive, the decor of the place is also very old and rundown. There was paint and wallpaper peeling off and signs of water damage was evident (we couldn't smell dampness though). With it being central city, you do get a fair bit of noise from the street - due to old building/no double glazing etc.

FIRSTLY.. Booked and paid for our room prior to leaving Gisborne, then i was told id require a BOND which was NOT stipulated in the booking of the room or the confirmation email and was disregarded when i brought it up with the reception when i checked in.. SECONDLY.. I wanted to bath my babies before dropping them to my sisters house but was told NO visitors.. Wed jst driven from Gisborne and my kids wanted me to bathe them but felt like a f***ing prison where u had no way of doing anything that you needed to do.. THIRDLY.. Our key card did not work and there was no one at reception to help and i couldnt find anything on the stupid paper they gave us at check in with a contact number for the manager or anyone.. I had to ring an Auckland manager to assist with that issue.. Myself and my toddler were left in the f***ing corridor outside our room waiting for someone to answer a f***ing phone call.. It was after 10pm, I had a toddler who was hungry and tired, needed a bath and to be put to bed but UNFORTUNATELY for us.. We couldnt get in the room because the stupid receptionist didnt do her job right the first time.. Luckily the lovely lady that did help us was absolutely amazing.. BUT this could have been avoided.. LASTLY.. A refund of my bond money should have been in my account within the hour but nothing.. U took the last of my money easily but havent given it back yet.. WILL NEVER BOOK WITH THESE PEOPLE AGAIN.. Everything about this place was COLD and Lonely

The bathroom facilities were very good but I found that the bath was very slippery and quite dangerous when you had to walk to the other end to have a shower. I also had a bit of trouble getting out of the bath after shower as you had to walk to the opposite end again and it was even more slippery having to stand on one leg to get over the edge of the bath which was quite wide. I mentioned this to reception and suggested some sort of anti-slip bathmat be available for older customers especially/

Was good value for the price until trying to have a shower. Running hot water was a mission and involved calling the assistance of front desk staff. It was found that the basin hot water tap required to be run in order for hot water to be available at the shower. Was hilarious solution but worked. 😂 Very tired hotel but clean and serviceable otherwise.

A grand old hotel, huge rooms, but past its heyday. Charged an extra $20 for a shockingly tricky car park. At one minute past 10am we were locked out of our room. Very convenient for local restaurants etc.
