My family has been visiting the Florida Keys for generations, and now that my husband and I have kids of our own, we’ve continued that tradition every summer. This was our first time staying at Tarpon Lagoon in Marathon. We know many homes in the Keys are older and don’t expect perfection, but we do expect cleanliness, safety, and things to work—and unfortunately, this rental fell short in several important ways. The issues we encountered:•The pool was cloudy our entire stay and never cleared up.•The ice maker didn’t work.Outdoor chairs were old and unstable—close to falling apart.•There was mold in the bathrooms, and hair left in the shower upon arrival.•One of our guests had to clean her own bathroom sinks before using them.•The trash can was already half full, and there was only one available for the entire stay.•The air conditioning was restricted to 72 degrees or you’re charged extra—problematic in late July/August heat. We had to keep blinds shut constantly just to manage the temperature.•Remotes were outdated, several didn’t work, and the downstairs TV didn’t work at all.•Wi-Fi wasn’t working at first, though to the owner’s credit, they did respond and it was fixed by the next day.•A sliding glass door was broken, and one of our guests stepped onto the balcony and got glass shards in her feet—this was a major safety concern.•Checkout is at 10 am and the cleaning crew was there the last day at 8 am rushing us. There are a lot better places to stay
