The hotel is in dire need of upgrading: carpeting is old, tv’s in rooms are tiny and have limited channel selections, lighting is poor, doors still require a key card (and they easily demagnetize!), etc. Front desk staff are only mildly knowledgeable and helpful, but our concierge (Jonathan) was great. Mama C restaurant is quite good; did not try the other one, and the rooftop patio was closed due to rain. The location of the hotel is excellent: right on St Paul with lots of shops, restaurants, and attractions within a short walk. However, Rue St Paul is currently under construction (May 2025), and Nelligan in particular was basically barricaded while we were there: hard to get in and out of, especially with luggage, and very noisy! Obviously a temporary situation, but it sure would’ve been nice of them to inform us of this when we made our reservation. It’s this kind of simple courtesy that you will likely find to be in short supply during your stay.

The property itself is beautiful however there was a lot of construction external to the property starting as early as 0700. Inside there were renovations going on too which I was not aware of when I booked. Would be helpful if Expedia was aware of these situations to inform potential guests. No dislikes. Jonathan on the concierge desk was especially helpful in planning our day. All the staff have been carefully hired and well trained. They were pleasant and professional. The food is superb. We dined in each of the three restaurants all of which were good. The Blues one was a particular favourite. Centrally located it is within easy reach of the station, old and central Montreal.

The staff at the hotel was excellent despite what they had to deal with. A section of the hotel had no A/C, had to change room which was easier as we arrived early. The city had to shut the water off for 4 hours on our first day. The street in front of hotel was closed. The sidewalks were barely existent, mostly gravel and rubber. Needless to say it was not what I expected in Old Montreal which took away from the experience. Having said that, the hotel coped the best they could.

Fantastic hotel!! Comfortable bed, spacious room & great ventilation in the bathroom after warm showers! Staff were welcoming, kind & patient providing us with recommendations & support whenever we needed. Good location - access to a variety of restaurant’s & areas of interest. The 3 stars - people were loudly walking the streets after shutting down the pubs/bars resulting in little to no sleep. Mind you we had arrived on a Saturday. And the construction outside minimized the walking spaces leaving little room for two people to pass so it was difficult to appreciate walking the area. However, less than a block away we got away from the construction & it was easier to navigate - we walked allot & used the metro conveniently located less than 10 minutes away to get around Old Montreal with ease.

Overall it was a great experience. The only complaint would be our first room had a view of the alley but we were quickly moved to a room of the street. I gave a three star for area around the property only because of the alley and the construction on the street.

The rooms were clean and comfortable. Staff were extremely hospitable & helpful. Hotel is conveniently located in heart of old Montreal with numerous attractions, restaurants and shops easily walkable. There is currently construction on street outside as well as hotel being renovated inside, but did not affect our experience. Would definitely stay at Hotel Nelligan again.
