ABOUT TREGO Trego is the hidden gem of Northwest Montana. Serving as the gateway to the Tobacco Valley and just 35 miles south of Canada, this small unincorporated town was initially settled by the Fortin family in early 20th century; their original farmhouse still stands on what is now Blarney Heights Farm. Trego grew when the Great Northern Railroad laid tracks through town, with a train depot and post office following soon after.
The railway through Trego remains an active resource operated by BNSF. Freight transports and passenger Amtrak trains run the rails daily, utilizing the 7-mile long Flathead Tunnel, America’s second longest railroad tunnel. There is truly nothing more majestic than hearing a whistle blow while taking in the fresh mountain air on a misty morning or during a blazing sunset.
