As there is also a covered area, children can visit the park with their parents or grandparents even in bad weather and in winter. Franconian Open-Air Museum Bad Windsheim More than 100 historical buildings, divided into different building groups, show the everyday rural life of past centuries in the region of Middle Franconia. Various events (e.g. demonstrations of old craft techniques and concerts) also take place on the grounds. There are also educational programmes for children and school classes. This makes the open-air museum an ideal destination for a hiking day. Ansbach In the former residential town of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach, which is also known as the town of Franconian Rococo, there is a picturesque old town with numerous magnificent buildings to admire. These include the former Margravial Residence, the courtyard garden and St Gumbert's Church. Imperial Castle Nuremberg An impressive castle complex above Nuremberg's Old Town, which was one of the most important imperial palaces of the Holy Roman Empire in the Middle Ages. Albrecht Dürer House in Nuremberg Set in romantic surroundings, the Albrecht Dürer House at Tiergärtner Tor, where the world-famous artist lived and worked, is one of the most popular museums in the capital of Middle Franconia. Erlangen In the city centre of Erlangen, which was planned in the 18th century, there are many magnificent Baroque-style buildings to admire, such as the palace of the former margraves with its park and orangery, the Margrave Theatre and several churches and palaces. Forchheim Forchheim is often referred to as a royal town because a Franconian royal palace stood here in the early Middle Ages, where several imperial diets and a royal coronation took place. At the same time, the picturesque half-timbered town is also considered the gateway to Franconian Switzerland. Forchheim's old town is surrounded by the ramparts and walls of the former Forchheim fortress and, at Christmas time, boasts the world's most beautiful Advent calendar in the remodelled town hall. Bamberg The medieval residential town has the largest and best-preserved old town in Germany with over 1,000 monuments and the three historic districts of the Inselstadt, Bergstadt and Gärtnerstadt, which is why Bamberg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Because there is so much to see, we recommend buying a guidebook before visiting the town.
