Fonyod is one of the oldest and largest resorts in the southwest of Lake Balaton. It has a large harbor, whose pier with a length of 462 meters is the longest pier of Lake Balaton. On this boulevard holiday guests can watch the numerous amateur anglers or enjoy the magnificent panorama of the lake. An unforgettable experience is, of course, the beautiful sunset.
Downtown Fonyod offers plenty of shopping. Also restaurants, exchange offices, pharmacies, pastry shops and discos are available to holiday guests. On Wednesdays and Saturdays is the popular Fonyoder sweater market, which owes its name to the sale of numerous sweaters in the 70s. Today, the offer is varied. It ranges from ceramics, wickerwork, clothing, sound carriers to the most unusual souvenir items.
The public beach of Fonyod is free of charge, as it is everywhere on Lake Balaton. Above all, Fonyod is valued for the variety of nearby destinations that make a varied holiday program possible. Tourists who do not just want to lie on the beach, but are particularly interested in the landscape and culture of the country, come here in Fonyod certainly at their expense.
For hikers, the surrounding mountains are interesting destinations, from which one has beautiful views of Lake Balaton. A hiking trail leads to the castle Csillagvar (in German: Sternburg). Worth seeing are also the remains of the border castle with the memorial column of the castle captain Balint Polonai Magyar, who had achieved fame in the time of the Turkish wars.
From Fonyoder harbor half-hour excursion boats operate on the north side. Especially recommended is a trip to Badacsony, from whose vineyard you can enjoy a wonderful panorama of Lake Balaton. Numerous wine taverns invite you to linger and wine tasting on the slope of the mountain. Note, however, that the excursion boats do not drive in the late evening! The mood on the return tours of the last excursion boats is understandably usually quite cheerful and exuberant.
An unforgettable experience for many tourists is the visit to a spa. The most popular and well-known thermal baths in the region are the natural thermal forest lake with a temperature of 35 degrees Celsius located in Heviz, the thermal bath in Zalakaros and the spa in Csisztapuszta, to which Fonyod even runs a narrow-gauge railway. The thermal baths usually offer massages and medical treatments.
On less sunny days, a trip to Keszthely is recommended. In addition to many shops, there is the Baroque Castle, once the residence of Count Festetics. Especially worth seeing is its impressive library.
