The area is renowned for its wildlife, including red squirrels, deer, foxes, badgers, and a variety of bird species such as ring ouzels and peregrines. Additionally, the roads in this part of Cumbria are less crowded than the main Lake District, making them ideal for cycling, with both on-road and off-road tracks available.?A short distance from the cottage lies Shap Abbey, a 15th-century ruin managed by English Heritage, offering a glimpse into the region’s history. Notably, the Haweswater Valley is the only valley in the Lake District without National Trust land ownership.
